Roman Deurne Helmet – 4th Century

The Deurne Helmet from the 4th century is an elaborate reconstruction of a late Roman cavalry helmet found near Deurne, Holland. The intricate ornamentation of the Deurne Helmet suggests that the wearer was a very high-ranking officer. A Roman coin found near the helmet bears the date 319, so the helmet is very likely from the early 4th century.
The Deurne helmet’s crown is made of 6 individual parts and the cheek pieces are moveable. The nape protection is attached with two buckled leather straps and is removable and adjustable. The helmet is hand-made from steel and brass and is comfortable due to its leather liner. Nasal, cheeks and nape pieces are covered on the inside with red leather.
